Home insulation in Redding, CA - a house that holds its temperature all year

Drafty rooms, a hot upstairs or a power bill that keeps climbing? We find where the air gets out, then fix it in order.

Where do you start when the whole house needs insulation?

Home insulation in Redding means finding where your house loses heat and cool air, sealing those leaks, and adding insulation to the attic, walls or crawl space so your rooms hold their temperature. On most houses the attic comes first, and the rest gets planned around what we find up there.

Most people call me about one room that won't stay comfortable, or a house they're fixing up that has a few tired inches in the attic and nothing much anywhere else. The price turns on how big the attic and walls are, how many inches are already up there, whether old material has to come out, how many gaps need sealing and how hard the attic is to get into. The schedule depends mostly on what has to happen before any insulation goes in, like a repair, a test or old material coming out, and the written estimate I give you lays out that order with the price for your house.

How we handle home insulation, start to finish

When you ask me about the whole house, I start by finding where it's losing the most and what has to happen first, and then we lay out the work in an order that fits your budget. In the attic I check how many inches are already there and whether any of it is wet or full of droppings, because new material over a bad layer just buries the problem. Our crew does the air sealing next, closing the gaps around can lights, pipes and the attic hatch so the new insulation isn't fighting a draft, and we keep the eave vents clear so the attic can still breathe. Then we add blown-in insulation, loose fill sent up through a hose, to an even depth all the way out to the edges, where most attics come up thin. Foam costs more and seals air at the same time it insulates, so I usually steer people toward sealing and topping up loose fill instead, unless your ductwork runs through the attic, where foam earns its price.

Sometimes the old material has to go first. If it's soaked, moldy or full of droppings, insulation removal clears it out so we start on clean framing. Cold floors usually trace back to what's under the house, and crawl space insulation takes care of that part once the attic is in order.

Home insulation rules in Redding and Shasta County

California's Energy Code covers changes to existing homes, not only new ones, and its standards vary by climate zone, so the work has to fit the rules for where your house sits. On Shasta County's inspection list, batt insulation in walls and ceilings gets its own inspection when it's used, and insulation blown into a ceiling is checked at the final inspection. Whether your job needs a permit comes down to the building office that covers your address, so I check with that office before we start, and when a permit is needed we handle the application and set up the inspections with you.

A lot of my calls are older houses with a thin, settled layer in the attic, a hot room upstairs or over the garage, and a crawl space nobody has looked at in years. We see the same houses on jobs in Shasta Lake and Anderson, and we handle them the same way, by looking first.

How home insulation works with us

  1. Call or send the form

You call (530) 232-9176 or send the form, and we get back to you to set a time for me to come out. Tell us which rooms bother you most, since that's where I'll start looking.

  2. I look through the house

I come out myself and go through the attic, crawl space or walls with you, noting what I find and explaining the order the work should go in. Then you get a written estimate that breaks the job into parts, so you can see what each costs and do it in stages if that suits your budget.

  3. Set a date and prepare

When you're ready we set a date and take care of any permit work together. If something has to happen first, like a test or old material coming out, it goes on the calendar ahead of the insulation.

  4. Install and walk through

Our installers do the work, and I walk through it with you before we call it done. You'll see the sealed gaps and the depth across the attic for yourself.

Questions before you insulate your house

What is the best way to insulate the existing walls in an older Redding house?

For most existing houses, blowing loose fill like cellulose, fiberglass or mineral wool into the closed walls works best, because it fills the cavities without tearing out any drywall. Spray foam can go into closed walls too, but it takes advanced skill and a certified installer, so it costs more for the same wall. If your siding is coming off anyway, the usual advice is to drill the sheathing and blow the empty cavities before the new siding goes on.

Should air sealing come before insulation?

Yes, seal first. The national guidance is to finish the attic air sealing and then do the insulation, and you can plan and budget the two jobs together. Sealing after the insulation is down means digging through it to find the gaps, so it rarely gets done right.

What should be fixed in my attic before adding insulation?

Wet insulation, moldy or rotted framing, vents blowing moist air into the attic and an attic with little ventilation should all be fixed first, and the national guidance is to have a professional handle them. Old knob and tube wiring, the early kind strung on ceramic knobs, can be a fire hazard where it touches insulation, so that gets corrected too. These are normal first steps, and if I find any of them they go on your plan ahead of the insulation.

How do I know if the insulation in my attic is vermiculite?

Vermiculite looks like light, pea-size, flaky gray pebbles, and if you see it, leave it alone until an approved lab has tested it, because it may contain asbestos. Your local health department can name an approved lab, so it's worth booking that test before any attic work starts. Mention it when you call and I'll plan the visit around it.

How much does blown-in attic insulation cost in Redding?

Across the US, installing blown-in attic insulation usually costs about $4 to $7.50 per square foot. Where your house lands depends on the size of the attic, how many inches are already up there, whether old material has to come out and how much sealing comes first. The written estimate gives you the number for your own attic.

Who can install insulation in California?

California licenses insulation contractors under its C-2 Insulation and Acoustical classification, which covers installing insulation for temperature or sound control. The same state board limits the down payment on a home improvement job to $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less, and other payments have to be spelled out in the contract and tied to work done or materials delivered.

Why Redding homeowners call A&M Redding Insulation Services for home insulation

  • I write every estimate myself

I come out to look at the job and write the estimate, and our installers do the work. I check it with you before we call it done, so the person who planned it is the one who signs off.

  • Older houses that won't behave

I learned the trade on an insulation crew and started this business in 2020, after months of working out why two rooms in my own house wouldn't hold their temperature. Houses where the obvious answer isn't the real one are the jobs I like most.

  • Licensed and fully insured

We're licensed and fully insured on every job. You can look up any California contractor on the state contractors board's license check before you hire anyone, us included.

  • Told when a job can wait

If a job won't help yet, I'll tell you instead of selling it to you. When the attic needs a repair or a test first, putting money into insulation before that only buries the problem.

On a whole house, getting the order right matters more than any one material. Call (530) 232-9176 or send us a note and I'll come take a look.

  • Insulation removal

When the old layer is wet, moldy or fouled by rodents, it has to come out before anything new goes in.

  • Crawl space insulation

Cold floors and a chilly first story often start under the house, not up in the attic.
